The Best Gift
As my son turns seven (7 YEARS OLD!!) on Dec. 27, I tell him that he was and still is my best Christmas gift ever. In honor of his birthday, I share with you the lyrics from my favorite Christmas Carol by Barbra Streisand "The Best Gift."

The best gift
That I ever got.
Didn’t really weigh a lot.
It didn’t have a ribbon ’round,
And it sometimes made a terrible sound.

The best of all it seems to me,
It wasn’t neath the Christmas tree.
And yet, I guess I’d have to say
That it made all the other presents twice as gay.

The best gift that I’ve ever known
I’d always wanted most to own.
Yet in my dreams of sugar and spice,
I never thought it could be so nice.

The best gift that I ever get
Was sometimes dry and sometimes wet.
Was usually pink but often times red,
As it lay so innocently in it’s bed.

The best gift of the year to me
The one I hold most dear to me.
A gift that simply drove me wild
Was a tiny new born child.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas comes early

Work today flowed in a typical slow-right-before-the-holiday pace, so I took advantage of the time to organize and clean up my work area in preparation for my move to a new job and new building. After a few hours, I feel as if I'm ready for a bath - it's amazing how dirty files and desktops can get!

Similar to moving a house, there is a mental and physical preparation that occurs when changing jobs. It's hard to throw away a folder because it means so much more than papers; this is the tangible collection of time, energy, knowledge and memories. But I applied the same theory to my desk drawers as I do my dresser drawers: if I haven't touched in a year's time, throw it away!

Unfortunately, that theory doesn't apply across the board - some things are simply too nice to throw away, but...not nice enough to keep. So the employees lucky enough to be working today (i.e. those who didn't save enough vacation time throughout the year) got to enjoy some early Christmas gifts. A frame here, a vase there, and everyone is happy!

Here's wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday and a great 2011! Merry Christmas!

Santa Knows

Out of the blue, Garrett adds two new items to his Christmas list, only days before Santa makes his mysterious appearance. As Gerard read over the list, he spotted the expected items, but then he noticed two listings that he questioned further. Garrett responded matter-of-fact that he wanted a PS1 or a PS2 because "either Playstation will work fine on our TV downstairs."

As only a seasoned parent could respond, Gerard responded saying that Santa knows what you have and what you need. Sometimes, Santa even knows when things are too expensive, or if an old video game system will make due for one more year. Oh yes, Santa knows.

Tammy the Tornado
What a whirlwind life has been these past few days and weeks! I really do feel like I'm hurrying up only to wait - and waiting isn't one of my strongest virtues! Once my new job begins on January 10, I know that the pace will be such that I'll be racing to catch up. Fortunately, I plan on getting recharged and energized during my time at home enjoying the holidays, yet I just wish I could be more productive now in working ahead. Oh well, plenty of time for work in the new year!
